Haystack Rock: Three Oregon Landmarks With the Same Name

Oregon has a number of well-photographed landmarks. There’s her triangular shaped Mt. Hood, deep blue Crater Lake, or spectacular Columbia Gorge. And along the coast? Hands down most tourists and locals alike are apt to take a selfie in front of Haystack Rock.
However, we recently discovered that depending on where you are, this could mean any one of three landmarks that happen to share the same name.
Down in the south, Bandon boasts the largest collection of monoliths including one called Haystack Rock. This 105’ tall bump looked more to us like a giant stack of pancakes than a pile of hay. Farther up the coast is perhaps the Haystack Rock that receives the most press. It is double the size of Bandon’s, looks just like a petrified haystack and is within spitting distance of the popular tide pools. Yet, it can’t claim bragging rights as the state’s biggest. That honor goes to the one that sits off shore from Pacific City. This gargantuan rock stands 435’ tall and looms over Cape Kiwanda.
